How to do Constructive Rest

Read all of it before starting, and read the cautions further down before starting at all.

  1. Lie on your back on a firm surface with a thin folded blanket under the head.

  2. Bend both knees and place the feet flat, roughly hip-width apart and about a foot from the hips.

  3. Let the knees rest against each other so no leg muscle has to hold them upright.

  4. Rest the hands on the lower ribs or the belly with the elbows heavy on the floor.

  5. Stay still and let the lower back settle towards the floor at its own pace.

Hold: 5–15 मिनिटे. संपूर्ण वेळ श्वास चालू ठेवा — श्वास रोखला जात असेल, तर आजच्यासाठी हे आसन जड आहे.

What Constructive Rest does

Described mechanically — what the movement does to muscle and joint. Not a list of conditions it treats, because a pose does not treat conditions.

  • Lets the legs balance against each other so the hip flexors have nothing to hold.
  • Allows the lower back to lengthen without any stretch being applied to it.
  • Provides a long supported hold with no muscular effort required, in a position almost anyone can take.

Constructive Rest is one of 21 restorative poses in this library and one of 88 poses rated beginner. Supported, low-effort poses held long, where the point is to stop working rather than to work.

Who should skip Constructive Rest, or change it

  • Pregnancy after the first trimester — swap to a side-lying rest with a pillow between the knees.
  • Reflux or breathlessness lying flat: raise the head and chest on a slanted stack of blankets.
  • Knee discomfort with the knees leaning together — place a folded blanket between them.
  • A long flat-supine hold does not suit everyone; a chair with the calves up is an equal alternative.

General information only — not medical advice. Some asanas are unsuitable during pregnancy, injury or specific conditions. Learn from a qualified teacher and stop if anything hurts. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or managing any health condition, ask your doctor before starting a practice, and learn the pose itself from a qualified teacher who can see you move.

Common mistakes in Constructive Rest

What tends to go wrong, and the specific correction — not "engage your core".

MistakeFeet placed far from the hips so the thighs work to keep the knees up.

FixWalk the heels closer until the knees can simply lean on each other.

MistakePressing the lower back down flat on purpose.

FixLeave it alone; the curve settles by itself when nothing is being forced.

How the energy figure on a yoga timetable is reached

  1. Nobody has measured a single asana in a metabolic cart, so no per-pose figure is published here — not by this site and not by anyone.
  2. The pose is matched to the nearest style of practice in the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. Constructive Rest sits at code 02170, yoga, Nadisodhana (seated, quiet practice), 2 MET.
  3. That MET value is put through the standard ACSM relationship for a stated reference adult of 70 kg.
  4. The result is the cost of a practice of that kind for as long as you practise — not the cost of holding this one shape.
  5. Scale it to yourself: the relationship is linear in body mass, so multiply by your own weight in kilograms and divide by 70.
kcal/min = MET × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200
         = 2 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200
         = 2.45 kcal per minute

Read it the way you would read a timetable: pick the length of session you actually sit down for, and that is the figure.

Asked before class

How do you do Constructive Rest?

Lie on your back on a firm surface with a thin folded blanket under the head. Bend both knees and place the feet flat, roughly hip-width apart and about a foot from the hips. Let the knees rest against each other so no leg muscle has to hold them upright. Rest the hands on the lower ribs or the belly with the elbows heavy on the floor. Stay still and let the lower back settle towards the floor at its own pace. Hold for 5–15 minutes.

What does Constructive Rest work?

Primarily the lower back, hip flexors, with the abdominals, glutes, neck assisting or lengthening. In mechanical terms: lets the legs balance against each other so the hip flexors have nothing to hold.

Who should not do Constructive Rest?

Pregnancy after the first trimester — swap to a side-lying rest with a pillow between the knees. Reflux or breathlessness lying flat: raise the head and chest on a slanted stack of blankets. Knee discomfort with the knees leaning together — place a folded blanket between them. A long flat-supine hold does not suit everyone; a chair with the calves up is an equal alternative. This is general information, not medical advice — if any of these apply to you, ask your doctor and learn the pose with a qualified teacher rather than from a page.

Is Constructive Rest suitable for beginners?

Yes. Constructive Rest is a beginner-level pose on this site, which means it is learnable in a first class and has a version that works for most bodies. The cautions above still apply.

How many calories does Constructive Rest burn?

The honest answer is that nobody has measured a single asana. The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities publishes MET values for styles of yoga, not for individual poses. Constructive Rest sits closest to Compendium code 02170, yoga, Nadisodhana (seated, quiet practice), at 2 MET — about 74 kcal for 30 minutes of that kind of practice for a 70 kg adult. Holding one pose for a minute is a rounding error either way.
